MAME 0.207

MAME 0.207

It’s almost the end of February, and more importantly it’s time for MAME 0.207 to be released! We’ve added two Nintendo Game & Watch titles this month: Fire (wide screen) and Snoopy Tennis. If you’re at all interested in plug-and-play TV games, this is going to be a huge update, with all the newly-supported JAKKS Pacific titles, including Disney Princess, Dragon Ball Z, Nicktoons, Spider-Man, and Wheel of Fortune, as well as a number of matching Game-Keys. The other big batch of additions this month comes in the form of a whole lot of e-kara cartridge dumps from Japan. For younger players, we’re steadily filling out the V.Smile software list, with eighteen newly supported titles. The VGM software list has been updated with the latest video game music rips, and we’ve added some more original floppy dumps and clean cracks to the Apple II software lists.
With the latest improvements to the MIPS R4000 CPU, WD33C93 SCSI and SGI Newport graphics emulation, it’s possible to install and run IRIX in MAME. This is a milestone achievement, and wouldn’t have been possible without some amazing dedication and collaboration on the part of the contributors and team members involved. With the addition of graphics and mouse support, Windows 1.0 runs on MAME’s Tandy 2000 emulation. MAME continues to add additional variants of supported systems, including the HP 9825T and the Esselte Modulab educational system.
Newly supported arcade games include an earlier prototype of Rise of the Robots, bootlegs of Ghost Chaser Densei and The Glob, and additional versions of Raiden Fighters 2, Guardian Storm, Pasha Pasha Champ, Lethal Enforcers, and X-Men. General usability improvements include friendlier Apple II disassembly, the restoration of key map support in SDL builds (Linux/macOS), and better initial window positioning on Windows.
You can get the source and Windows binary packages from the download page.

Godot tutorial based off of the roguelike Unity3D tutorial

2016-11-22 17:47: it's been a while! Very busy with work this last month, but here it is! This post is all about AI + the turn based game loop. It's more technical than the other parts but hopefully still enjoyable!
2016-11-16 23:40: introducing autoloaded scripts (so a bit about the singleton pattern), music, SFX, procedurally generated feedback (shake effect on destructible objects when attacked), loads of fun :)
2016-11-16 23:40: this is just the solution to the second assignment, it was supposed to be a very simple assignment so if you tried it out I hope you got it! :)
2016-10-26 02:16: we've resolve the player collision in the last part. This part include proper collision detection for pickable objects (Food & Soda) and how to use them to replenish Player energy. I'll go over signals a bit and how to use them, setters & getters and why they might be useful, a bit about the AnimationPlayer node, how powerful it can be and finally some important gotchas! Hope you'll enjoy it :)
2016-10-23 14:20: it's been a while since the last update cause I've been busy with other stuff as well, but here it is! The next part of the tutorial, covering player input handling, collision detection and a bunch of cool Godot features. It goes in great detail on how and why it has the structure it has! Hope it helps someone around here!
2016-09-26 11:10: released the solution for the surprise assignment from building the board
2016-09-22 19:02: part 02 of the tutorial is live! just follow the link. It's a pretty big one, because I go through a lot of small details and try to explain as much as possible. Hopefully this won't divert your attention from the main objective of the tutorial! Let me know how you find it, either in the comments below or in the comments on the website! Thanks
2016-09-20 00:20: added finished project files for your convenience (and I'll be doing this for every other step as well)
2016-09-18 12:48: (introduction & project set-up) added a more lengthy explanation on the difference between AnimatedSprite and Sprite + AnimationPlayer workflow. Since it came up a number of times now I thought I'd go a bit into it and why I chose AnimatedSprite over the other solution

2016-09-19 01:55 ANOUNCEMENT

I'm experimenting with Godot + HTML5 for creating a more elaborate and interactive learning experience. Please follow [this link][link removed] and help me out with the survey (just one question) I've put together meant to give me the direction in which to put the effort. Thanks!
2016-09-19 20:42 update on the above: thanks for all who participated on the survey! I think it served it's purpose and the results reflect exactly what I thought: it is a complete failure! haha
HTML5 offline I don't need this
30% 15% 55%
But there's even better news, now I won't go into it as I want it to be a surprise :). But I'll say this: I was approached by someone on the unofficial godot discord forum who wants to help me with the tutorial series. With what, you'll just have to wait and see ;). This is really unexpected for me and I couldn't be happier! So thanks all for motivating me to do this!
With the release of version 2.1 Godot is steadily increasing in popularity and gaining features very fast as the core team of developers are tirelessly ever improving it. The game engine has a good enough 2D editor as it is and version 3.0 promises to become a real contender in the market, along side huge names like Unity3D, Unreal, CryEngine etc.
The shortcomings at the moment are lack of good documentation and good tutorials. So with this, I did something that probably others have already thought of: follow tutorials from other game engines and try to apply them in Godot. With the help of the roguelike Unity3D tutorial I was able to create the roguelike mini-game in Godot. Soon after I decided to make a tutorial series especially targeted at Godot, basically translating this Unity3D tutorial over. Here is where you'll find it and it's my hope that I'm able to peek the interest of others in Godot and also help with game design and programming patters. It's still at the very beginning and I plan to release a "chapter" about every 2-3 weeks.
I have general programming, but no real gamedev. experience. Even so I have read enough articles and am a somewhat long time lurker in the gamedev. shadows so I think I'm at a level at which I know what I am doing 80% of the time at least. I know there's a group of people that don't approve of newbies making tutorials, but hey, no one is actually forcing you to take part and really, before drawing any conclusions like that check it out first, sentence it after. It is my hope to increase awareness of FOSS alternatives since we are living in such a great time for open source software!
With this in mind, if anyone is interested in it, please help me with feedback and pointers, let me know if it's understandable enough, if the layout is ok and so on, so I can become better in helping others! Thanks for your time!
edit: I'd like to leave some extra information here just in case anyone is trying to get into Godot and doesn't know where to start:
  1. FreeNode #godotengine IRC channel - can't stress enough how much helpful the IRC channel is, there is a somewhat strong nucleus in the community with people that are very helpful and always lurking in there so usually the responses are immediate (although we're mostly still at the beginner level I'll say), unless there's a time zone issues or something like this. Also some of the core developers of the engine are most times available around (also depending on time zone)
  2. FreeNode #godotengine-devel IRC channel - if no one is really able to explain to you in #godotengine then this is your next bet, because it's populated by the core team of Godot engine developers. But please be considerate and only ask questions here when you absolutely can't find the answer some other way. The devs are hard at work to make Godot even more awesome and you can understand it would be bad to bug them all day long with questions on how to use the engine. This is a great channel if you want to get started in developing the engine itself
  3. https://godotengine.org/qa/ - the official QA Godot forum, growing at the moment. Chances are if you have a common enough question, this forum has the answer to it
  4. https://godotdevelopers.org/forum/ - the official Godot forum, it isn't very popular yet, but there are some few around that can help
  5. https://discord.gg/wRmBf6j - an unofficial Godot discord, but still could be useful. The nice part is that it's real-time, like IRC, but we need lots more people to make this a worthy place!
  6. http://docs.godotengine.org/en/latest/ - finally, the official documentation. It is still lacking quite a bit, but keep an eye on it as it is constantly updated. Be sure to go to this place first before trying to ask about your problem. 90% of the time it's a matter of you not reading the relevant documentation, well, in Godot's case it might be more like 70% of the time because the documentation is still somewhat behind, especially on new modules that pop up (like the new AStar class that was introduced a few days ago in v2.2).
Try to be pro-active, learn, share and be part of the community, that's the only way of increasing the quality of these places.
I will be commenting & updating this thread as I'll update the tutorial series so keep an eye on it and hopefully you'll have a nice time following along! So far the responses are a lot better than I anticipated :) which is a big morale boost. I'll give it my best guys and I hope you will too!
