New York

Five Fast Facts

  1. New York City’s education system alone is responsible for more students than the student population of the eight smallest US States.
  2. Henry Hudson built Fort Nassau in 1614 on the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers (near the present-day capital of Albany), claiming what would become the New Amsterdam colony for the Dutch. New Netherlands would spread as far east as Cape Cod and as far south as Delaware before Dutch colonies were annexed by the British in 1664 and renamed after King James II of England, then the Duke of York.
  3. The combined enrollment at the City and State University Systems of New York is just shy of one million students, making them among the largest post-secondary education institutions in the world (CUNY ranks 12th worldwide, SUNY 16th).
  4. The longest baseball game in history was played in Rochester between the Pawtucket Red Sox and the Rochester Red Wings. The game lasted 33 innings, with 8 hours and 25 minutes of playing time. Future Hall of Famers Cal Ripken, Jr. and Wade Boggs were playing in the game; Pawtucket won 3-2.
  5. New York City was the first Capital of the United States. George Washington’s 1789 inauguration as President took place on the balcony at Federal Hall.

Tech Alley
A 19-county region stretching from the Quebec-NY border to the NYC suburbs, Tech Alley is the nickname given to the eastern part of the state to promote the Albany area as a high-tech industrial zone competitive with Boston or Silicon Valley. Aided by tech schools such as Rensselear and SUNY Polytechnic Institute, the area has seen significant growth in the computer hardware industry as well as strides in nanotechnology and integrated circuit manufacturing. IBM’s Watson Research Center has its main laboratory in Yorktown Heights.
Media, Arts and Literature
New York is the center of the book publishing industry in the United States, with industry giants HarperCollins and Random House located alongside smaller independent publishers. New York City is the setting of many novels, and the metro area has a strong place in Jewish American literature due to the high number of Jewish Americans who live in the metro area. The PEN American Center is located in New York City, and is the oldest international literary and human rights organization. The PEN American Center is the largest of the 141 PEN centers, and is currently lead by author Salman Rushdie. New York City is home to some of the most prominent museums in the country, with the Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met), Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Guggenheim Museum, Madame Tussauds, and the Ellis Island Museum all being significant historic attractions and cultural sites. Although not as prominent in film and literature as New York City, upstate New York has a small filmmaking industry and has been the setting of several novels and stories (especially the Buffalo-Niagara region).
Over 50 million tourists visit New York City each year, with major landmarks such as The Empire State Building, Ellis Island, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Central Park, The Statue of Liberty, and Times Square being among the largest tourist attractions in the United States. There are over 28,000 acres of public parks in New York City, and 14 miles of public beaches. Niagara Falls is one of the most popular and widely known tourist sites in the state, with annual visits numbering over 28 million. The Maid of the Mist boat cruise docks from both the US and Canadian side, and carries passengers directly into the rapids below the falls. The falls have been “shut off” (diverted) periodically for erosion control and safety issues; the next diversion should happen in a few years to repair a pair of bridges on the American side. The Adirondacks in upstate New York are notable for outdoor activities near the lakes, including skiing, hiking, and watersports. There are some incredibly challenging trails on the Adirondack mountains, and the area has become a destination for hikers looking to prove themselves.
European Jewish Cuisine has had a significant impact on New York City food culture, with the idea of the Delicatessen being brought over by Jewish immigrants. There are still many prominent Jewish neighborhoods in the city serving authentic Jewish foods that are now staples of American cuisine, such as bagels, pastrami, brisket, corned beef, dill pickles and cream cheese. New York City has a strong food culture, with many foods being iconic symbols of the city. These include several dishes that were invented (allegedly or factually) in the city, and include dishes such as cheesecake, pizza, pretzels, the black and white cookie, hot dogs, Italian ice and the Delmonico steak. Dishes that are alleged to have been invented in the city include the Bloody Mary, the chef’s salad, chicken and waffles, the Cronut, General Tso’s chicken, the Manhattan, penne alla vodka, and spaghetti and meatballs. Additionally, companies such as PepsiCo, Haagen-Dazs, and AriZona are all located in the city or its suburbs.
Upstate New York has several culinary claims to fame, including beef on weck (roast beef on a kummelweck roll with horseradish), Utica greens (a dish made of hot peppers, sautéed greens, chicken stock, escarole, cheese, and prosciutto), the Michigan hot dog (a take on a Coney dog, which is a Michigan take on a Coney Island hot dog), and the buffalo wing (fried chicken wings coated in sauce, usually hot sauce). The popular sports bar chain Buffalo Wild Wings began its life as Buffalo Wild Wings and Wecks; while it has since dropped weck from its menu outside of New York, it is still referred to as BW3’s by many who remember the original menu.
New York is one of the most heavily represented states in the country, with teams representing both the New York City and Buffalo regions of the state in the Big Four US Sports.

Watkins Glen International is the major race track in New York state. The track currently hosts races for both NASCAR and the United SportsCar Championship, and was the host of the United States Grand Prix from 1961 to 1980. The track is known for its distinctive blue Armco barriers, which have been controversial in the past (due to the wrecks that claimed the lives of Helmut Koinigg and Francois Cevert). NASCAR has not run the full 3.4-mile course (The Boot), but runs a shorter 2.45-mile course; however this is rumored to change, with repaving efforts underway.

On the one year anniversary of EGS, let's look back at everything they've "accomplished"

1) A search bar (That doesn't even return the results you're looking for) (Hell, their "release date" sort seems to sort games by date added to the client, not actually released to the public)
2) Preloading (On one game, thanks to Gearbox's crunching and efforts
3) Playtime tracking. It only took 9 months to add a counter that can only increase. But whoops, the only way to see your gametime for a game is to...have to go into the settings menu for each game individually. That's odd.
4) Cloud Saves (That seem to break more than they fix)
5) They created a roadmap (Then missed their goals, then missed them again, and then pretty much abandoned it altogether)
6) They strengthened their portfolio by buying Psyonix. (Then removed loot boxes. Then replaced them with a clone of their FOMO Fortnite store with ridiculous prices)
7) They bought EasyAntiCheat, then apparently paused Linux development, something Valve was using to help strengthen Proton. Epic has since stated Linux development is not paused)
8) They have spent millions of dollars to secure "exclusives" like Bee Simulator, Rune II, Phoenix Point, and Ooblets
9) They announced a large toolset to allow any game to harness cross-platform play (Then abandoned this too)
10) According to an ex-Reddit mod, they are paying /FortniteBR mods in V-Bucks to censor and manipulate the subreddit
11) Their "support team" accidentally sent sensitive, personal information to a random person. Their support team in general is just not very good] it seems. You can find literal mountains of evidence of this.
12) They wanted to make Darq an exclusive for the store. And when the developer said no, Epic refused to sell his product at all. (So much for helping the little guy. This is even more a slap in the face as Epic wants to "curate" their store, so only indie devs they accept can get their "competitive" 12% revenue cut, but you also have to sell exclusively. Epic however does not force this on big games like Death Stranding, Vampire The Masquerade 2, and Cyberpunk 2077. Epic is just bullying smaller developers.
13) They have a history of abandoning things constantly. (Paragon, Infinity Blade, Gears of War, Unreal Tournament, Fortnite: Save the World might as well be dead too.
14) They announced that Fortnite for Android will not be distributed on the Google Play Store (Due to Google's "unfair" 30% cut), then recently asked Google if they could distribute on the Google Play store but keep 100% of the sales of V-bucks. Google has since responded by telling them they are not getting special treatment
15) Ubisoft games bought on the Epic Games Store will download the files for the game, then launch uPlay, which will download it again. This happens for pretty much every Ubisoft game. Essentially requiring a double install
16) Due to the Epic Games Store not supporting Linux, long running games that support Linux but are sold on the Epic Games Store will not work on Linux. Even though Epic said back in April that they were "working" on Linux support.
17) Epic passes transaction fees onto the customer, causing games to be more expensive on EGS over Steam. Steam eats these charges and at most all you have to pay is tax.
18) During their first "Mega Sale", multiple publishers removed their games entirely from the client, due to Epic devaluing games forcefully without the consent of the parties involved. Consumers were also having their accounts banned for buying too many games and triggering fraud protection due to the store not having a shopping cart
19) The Epic Games Store tends to have more issues than most trying to do basic things every store/client should be able to do without issue (bonus (bonus 2)). This is the company who runs a launcher were even paying customers can't access their non-Fortnite games when Fortnite crashes the server. Showing Epic's entire infrastructure is as the mercy of Fortnite.
20) Fortnite has gotten under a lot of heat for supposedly stealing dance moves from creators without consent, just to use in their cash shop to make money. Copyrighting dance moves is a grey area, so come to your own thoughts on that one. But most of the suits have been dropped since then due to copyrighting dances being a weird thing.
21) is a contentious point. It has to deal with the "spyware" allegations of the client. This is very subjective, is about China and their grip on western corporations, Tencent (who helped create China's current social credit system and owns 40% of Epic as well as shares in Reddit, Blizzard, Riot Games, Grinding Gear Games, Tesla, Ubisoft. Bluehole as well as Supercell, Frontier Developments, Kakao, Paradox, Fatshark, Funcom, Sharkmob, and Discord. All you can really do is look at the evidence of Epic scanning tons of things on your PC, scanning the Steam directory and making copies of files while avoiding the Steam API and thinking what you want about the situations.
And remember, this is all from a company ran by a guy who loves being toxic, spends most of his time rap battling people, loves trying to act like he started the "competive" marketplace. This is the guy who blatantly says pushing transaction fees onto consumers is the only way a 12% cut will work. The same guy who, about a decade ago swore that PCs were dead and not good for gaming, and consoles would be the future. He also like to act like his store isn't a monopoly, and has gone on record blatantly saying consumers don't matter
If anyone has any missing information I should add, please let me know. I want to make this as comprehensive as possible.
