Trying to setup a serial to ethernet adapter

I bought one of these to try and connect to an Onset HOBO data logger. I want to be able to connect to and read the data off of this data logger over the internet. When its finally installed it will be half way across the country. Right now I'm just trying to get it to work on my own network. Usually I read the data off the logger using a USB->Serial adapter along with the logger's pc software. I've tried using a serial port redirector to just try and access this thing on my own network. The software I've tried has been CPR Manager, and Serial Port Redirector from Fabulatech, but either they just plain don't work, or the logger software isn't recognizing the logger over this connection.
Edit: I got the actual device to work. I can connect to it with Hyperterminal. Now I'm just having problems getting the Onset software to recognize the device.

My 12 Super-Fun Billable Hours In Bakersfield

I'll try to keep this short, but I tend to babble so please stay with me here! So I work for a small networking company. What we do is design an implement networks for small to medium-sized businesses, and we maintain them as well with support contracts. However, not everyone is interested in dishing out the fund for a 3-year contract, so they prefer to keep us on as their tech support, but agree to pay us our regular hourly rate ($125/hour) whenever an issue arrises. So to begin this story, our office is located in Anaheim, California and this client just happens to be in Bakersfield, California - a cool 140 miles north. However, I live further south than Anaheim by 18 miles, so this only adds to the drive.
Anyway, on to the story: So on Wednesday, my boss gives me a call while I'm out at a client's and says
"hey, so how would you like to drive out to Bakersfield tomorrow for $client?"
Naturally, the first thing that pops into my head is that I will be getting paid to drive for a total of about 7 hours, so I agree to the task. I ask my boss what the issue is and he simply states
"Their switch is down and it needs to be replaced. Just swing by the office and pick up the replacement one and then head on out tomorrow morning"
Sweet deal! I pick up the replacement and go home for the day. Now, to get to Bakersfield I have to drive right through Downtown-ish L.A. area, and that is known for the worst traffice ever, so I hatch the plan to get up at 5, and be on the road by 5:30. Well, I ended up leaving at 5:40, so pretty darn close. After being slammed in traffic for hours driving my 5-speed car, I finally arrive just before 8:30 AM to start my day. I walk in, introduce myself (I have never been to this location before), and get pointed to the "server room". As it turns out, their entire network is down - not even the server is online (a fact my boss neglected to mention to me). It is important to note that this entire issue started to happen when there was a power outage the day before. Their UPS has failed so when the power went out, all equipment went down. Here is the layout:
Outside line -> Router -> ASA -> Switch
Except it is important to note that the server is plugged directly into the ASA...not the switch. And the server has no connection. Well, whatever. I replace the switch anyway because what WAS installed, was one of these. Yeah, I was appalled. So anyway, I start the troubleshooting! I try to ping the server from one of the workstations...no go. I try pinging the router...no go. I plug my laptop directly into the switch and assign it a static IP. Nothing. Alright, time to make some adjustments.
I plug the server directly into the switch, go to a workstation, and try to ping...success! I can now ping the server and access network shares. Cool, but still no internet. Next, I plug the server directly into the router...INTERNET! Woohoo! Alright, so I know the line is active, the DNS and DHCP are working server-side, but anything plugged into the ASA is not working. The ASA must have had a huge failure when the power failed. Alright, no worries - there is a spare!
I ask where the spare ASA is, and the guy goes and grabs it for me. It is still brand new and sealed, which means I need to configure it. Alright, I can do this...except I can't. My laptop does not have a serial port for the console. Neither does the server. Luckily (or unluckily - however you want to view it), all the workstations are still old desktops running XP that have serial ports! And, since they are running XP, they have Hyperterminal pre-installed!
I leap into action! I grab the ASA and fly over to a workstation, get access to the back, and plug the old, defective ASA into the serial port. I connect to the ASA within Hyperterminal, run the config output and capture it to text. I then open the txt file, remove all the garbage that it puts in there to make it nice and clean, verify that everything is how it is supposd to be, save, disconnect the old ASA, plug in the new one, connect, copy and paste the config, save to startup-config and I'm done! Feeling extra confident that my day is about to be over, I strut over to the server room and install the newly-configured ASA and hope that it all works.
It doesn't. I feel defeated. I take a lunch break.
45 minutes later I am back! I call my boss:
Me: "So I have narrowed it down to the ASA. Everything works if the ASA is not there and the ASA is just screwing everything up."
Boss: "Did you replace the ASA?"
Me: "Yup"
Boss: "Did you configure it properly?"
Me: "Yup"
Boss: "Did you try switching out the ethernet cable for a new one?"
Me: "Huh? They had a power outage...how would that help?"
Boss: "I know it sounds absolutely crazy, but trust me, stranger things have happened"
So, I grab a new network cable. I grab the old ASA. I unplug the new ASA and take it down. I set the old ASA up again, but this time with a new cable going from the ASA to the router. I plug the server directly into the ASA. I wait. Nothing. I wait some more. Nothing. And then: That annoying P-O-S yellow cone in the taskbar goes away...I am connected to the internet. I ping a workstation...it responds. I run over to a workstation: it is online.
By this time it is 2PM. I have spent hours and hours of my time working and configuring for no reason. I drove for 3 1/2 hours and over 150 miles in traffic, all to replace a damn cable. I guess the silver lining to this all is that $client pays $125/hour for all time spent, even my driving time to and from. I did not get home until 5:37 PM - just shy of 12 hours after I left for Bakersfield that day. I basically sold them a $1,500 cable.
EDIT I can't believe I left out the best part! It was their cable! I just found it in the server room!
