Observations from Joe Judge's First Game - The Athletic
1. Judge explained his philosophy on getting the best out of players after he was hired in January.
“What I learned from Coach (Bill) Belichick was real simple: Be flexible within your personnel,” Judge said during his introductory news conference. “Don’t try to shove round pegs into square holes. Figure out what you have. Let them play to their strengths. Don’t sit in a meeting and tell me what you don’t have in a player. Don’t tell me they can’t do certain things. Tell me what they can do and then we’ll figure out as coaches, because that’s our job, how we can use that. That’s our responsibility.”
And yet, in Judge’s first game, he became the third Giants coach to ask tight end Evan Engram to block. It should be clear by now that Engram simply can’t block the likes of Steelers outside linebacker T.J. Watt, but that was the position the tight end was put in at the goal line early in the opener. Not surprisingly, Watt blew past Engram and hit Daniel Jones as he threw, resulting in an incompletion that was nearly a fumble. Engram was a liability as a run-blocker as well.
Despite a poor performance as a receiver (two catches for nine yards on seven targets), that is Engram’s strength. His speed makes him a mismatch at tight end.
It should be clear to Judge what Engram can’t do (block) and what he can do (catch). So now it’s on the coach to put his philosophy into practice and stop putting the offense into bad spots by asking Engram to block.
2. Jones was only sacked three times, but he avoided two others by scrambling as the Steelers applied consistent pressure throughout the game. But when the blocking held up, Jones was on point. His ball placement remains one of his best qualities and he repeatedly threw passes into perfect spots when given time in the pocket.
Jones didn’t get much help from his receivers, as they dropped three balls and Engram was flagged for offensive pass interference on a 24-yard strike up the seam. Jones’ 41-yard touchdown pass to Darius Slayton was on the money after getting good protection.
Jones’ biggest miscue was the interception on second-and-3 from Pittsburgh’s 4-yard line in the third quarter. That was Jones’ first interception in 64 career passes in the red zone.
3. The Giants used 11 personnel (1 RB, 1 TE, 3 WR) on 34 of 63 snaps, but that includes all 13 plays on their last touchdown drive, when they were exclusively throwing to try to score quickly. The Giants’ use of 13 personnel (1 RB, 3 TE, 1 WR) on 20 snaps was exceptionally high.
For perspective, the league average last season was 60 percent for 11 personnel and three percent for 13 personnel. The Giants used 13 personnel on 32 percent of their snaps on Monday night, and their usage of 13 personnel and 11 personnel was nearly identical until the last drive.
This seems like an example of Judge shaping a game plan to an opponent. Dallas and New England each used 13 personnel on two percent or fewer of their snaps last season, so it’s not a staple of either of the biggest influences on the Giants offense. With Pittsburgh having such explosive edge rushers, the Giants likely decided to use more tight ends to add more protection. This worked on the touchdown to Slayton, with two tight ends staying in to block to provide max protection that allowed the deep route to develop.
The Giants didn’t always put the three tight ends on the line, occasionally spreading them out and going with an empty backfield. That’s where Engram should be an asset, as defenses need to put bigger personnel on the field to match-up with the three-tight end look and therefore have less athleticism available to cover Engram.
Having the added beef provided by the extra tight ends (Kaden Smith and Levine Toilolo joined Engram) didn’t help the run game, which produced just seven yards on 16 carries by running backs. Playing three tight ends crowds the box and there was nowhere for Saquon Barkley to run on most plays.
4. Defensively, linebacker Blake Martinez, linebacker Lorenzo Carter, cornerback James Bradberry, safety Julian Love and safety Jabrill Peppers were every-down players. It’s common for defensive backs to play every snap and Martinez was brought in to be the three-down leader of the defense. But that’s a significant increase for Carter, who played 69 percent of the defensive snaps last season.
The Giants have high expectations for Carter, and the 2018 third-round pick seems like a good fit in this defense. He had three pressures in an active performance against the Steelers.
The Giants rotated Kyler Fackrell (28 snaps), Oshane Ximines (26 snaps) and Markus Golden (22 snaps) on the edge. It’s understandable that the Giants want to give the young Ximines an opportunity, but he remains a liability against the run. Expect Golden’s snap count to rise as the season progresses unless Ximines makes major strides.
The Giants used extra defensive backs throughout the game. Slot cornerback Darnay Holmes played 47 of 64 snaps, while third safety Logan Ryan played 38 snaps. Ryan wasn’t in a training camp before signing with the Giants on Sept. 4 and he only had five practices before the opener, so expect his role to increase as he gets up to speed.
Peppers essentially played linebacker when Ryan was on the field, with Ryan mostly playing deep safety alongside Love. Peppers took the place of “starting” inside linebacker Devante Downs, who only played 14 snaps.
The flip side of using so many defensive backs is limited usage for defensive linemen. The Giants mostly had two defensive linemen on the field, while using just one in some passing situations. Leonard Williams (44 snaps), Dalvin Tomlinson (32 snaps) and Dexter Lawrence (30 snaps) saw the most action on the line.
The Giants’ significant investment in defensive linemen doesn’t seem compatible with their role in the new coaching staff’s system. Perhaps the light usage of defensive linemen was game plan dependent, but coordinator Patrick Graham leaned heavily on sub packages last season in Miami as well. And most teams in the league are pass-heavy, while the Steelers actually used bigger offensive personnel than most, deploying a sixth offensive lineman on a handful of snaps.
5. Williams had an encouraging performance, finishing with five tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack. The sack was due to the coverage, but Williams showed impressive strength in dragging the 6-foot-5, 240-pound Ben Roethlisberger to the ground.
Now, the Giants need Williams to play like that every week. His $16.1 million cap hit this season is the eighth-highest in the league among defensive linemen. Players in that price range need to be disruptive every game.
6. One of the criticisms of Martinez after he signed a three-year, $30.75 million contract with the Giants was that he made too many tackles downfield in four seasons with the Packers. But Martinez’s team-high 12 tackles on Monday were mostly around the line of scrimmage. Martinez showed recognition and burst to close fast on ball carriers.
Another knock on Martinez was coverage, but that doesn’t figure to be a big part of his role in this defense since Graham plays so many defensive backs. Martinez will likely be limited to covering backs on short routes, while Ryan and Peppers contend with tight ends.
7. Though the Giants had some nice individual performances on defense, they allowed Pittsburgh’s No. 2 back, Benny Snell, to rush 19 times for 113 yards, while Roethlisberger completed 66 percent of his passes with three touchdowns and no interceptions.
The issue for the Giants is they don’t appear to have any difference-makers on defense, although their hope is that’s what young players like Carter and Lawrence develop into. But there’s no one on this Giants defense capable of taking over a game the way Watt and counterpart Bud Dupree did on Monday night.
Impressively, Pittsburgh drafted Watt and Dupree with late first-round picks — Watt went seven picks after Engram in the 2017 draft. The Giants have had seven picks in the top 36 in general manager Dave Gettleman’s three drafts and haven’t landed a dominant defensive player with any of those selections. Four of those picks were used on offensive players, while the others were Lawrence, cornerback DeAndre Baker and safety Xavier McKinney. Baker, who is facing armed robbery charges, was waived last week, while McKinney is on injured reserve after fracturing his foot during training camp.
8. It was one game against a tremendous front seven, but right tackle Cameron Fleming had a rough showing. If the career backup doesn’t raise his play, the Giants will have to consider getting third-round pick Matt Peart into the lineup.
Peart was considered a project after getting drafted out of UConn, but he impressed the coaching staff during training camp. It’s a good sign that Peart was active as the swing tackle on Monday night, signaling the staff’s confidence that he can play if needed.
This is where Nate Solder’s opt out hurt the Giants. For as much as Solder struggled last season, he’s a better player than Fleming. Solder would have given the Giants a proven veteran at one tackle spot and No. 4 pick Andrew Thomas on the other side for this season. Instead they have Thomas and a major question mark. The Giants shouldn’t speed up Peart’s developmental schedule in response to Fleming’s play, but the clock is ticking if the veteran doesn’t improve.
9. Golden Tate had missed one game in the eight seasons before signing a four-year, $37.5 million contact with the Giants last offseason. Since joining the Giants, Tate has missed six of 17 games.
Tate was suspended for the first four games of last season for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances, he missed another game last season with a concussion and was sidelined in Monday’s opener with a hamstring injury.
Though Tate performed well in the 11 games he played last season, it was always questionable to sign a receiver who is now 32 to that type of deal. The contract looks worse with the new coaching staff appearing to favor multiple tight end packages and Sterling Shepard operating best out of the slot anyway. It will be interesting to monitor Tate’s role when he returns to action.
10. Barkley’s boom or bust nature continues. In 30 career games, he’s averaged 4.0 yards per carry or less 15 times. That he averages 4.7 yards per carry in his career is a testament to the boom factor, as he’s averaged over 7.0 yards per carry in five games. He’s been held under 50 yards rushing 11 times, while topping 100 yards 11 times.
The offensive line deserves much of the blame for the run game’s inconsistency during Barkley’s career. And his athletic brilliance is unmatched when he gets into the open field. But the Giants need to find a way to raise the floor, so games with double-digit carries and single-digit yardage, which has happened twice in the last eight games, don’t become a regular occurrence.
11. Judge twice had opportunities to make aggressive statements early in the opener. Faced with 4th-and-1 at Pittsburgh’s 40-yard line on the opening drive, Judge kept the offense on the field but only in an attempt to draw the Steelers offside. The Giants broke the huddle too late to give Jones enough time to sell a hard count, so they took a delay of game penalty and punted.
“We didn’t think it was the right time in the game right there. We had an option to go for it or not. We’re going to put faith on our defense there,” Judge said. “We figured we’d punt the ball down there, which obviously worked out. It was after the delayed penalty right there. That wasn’t the time of the game to do it.”
The Steelers muffed the ensuing punt and the Giants recovered at the 3-yard line. After picking up one yard on three plays, Judge elected to kick a chip-shot field goal instead of going for it on fourth down.
“We had three swings of the bat already down there in the low red (zone) area,” Judge said. “At that point, we wanted to come away with some points. Pittsburgh’s a team you can’t just go on down there and come away with no points, which obviously happened later in the game (on Jones’ interception).”
12. The Giants only had four penalties for 25 yards, and that includes the delay of game penalty they took intentionally when trying to draw the Steelers offside. As it is for all coaches, limiting penalties is going to be an emphasis for Judge throughout the season.
