(SPOILERS) TL;DR My Review of MGSVTPP
I'm one of the admins of MGSForums. A while back in August 2015, I got invited to the Bootcamp Event, which I passed on to an associate who lives in LA to go on my behalf, and as of August 31st, I've been playing V pretty consistently on and off. Nonstop for some weeks, and other weeks, I don't touch my consoles or PC at all. And I feel really strongly about this game, but everyone I know's already played it, made their opinion, moved on, yadda yadda yadda.
So, rather than make an extensive review like someone who knows what the hell they're doing, I'll just make a Pros and Cons list and give my tl;dr opinion at the end.
- The gameplay is phun as phuck. There's just no other way around it. This is the single best stealth game I've ever played with the most organic feeling, smoothest gameplay I've ever experienced.
- The controls are snappy and responsive like nobodies business. That I can get knocked down, sweep kick a motherfucker, then snap back to my feet and blow his head off is amazing.
- Great missions that have literal assloads of replay value, can be tackled a buncha different ways most times, and is almost always fun every time.
- Great level design in the outposts. They aren't GZ, but they still afford tons of ways to get in and out. OKB04LyfeSon
- I'm not watching the game, wishing I was playing these cool cutscenes anymore. It's very much a video game and the noninteractive stuff is decidedly much less intrusive than it was before.
- The sheer amount of crazy stupid shit I can do at any given time is amazing. I can do so much with inflatable Kiefersnakes, from knocking people off roofs with them, to lacing them with explosives, or slowly driving a man insane by tossing him into a twelve decoy ring of "You're pretty good!"
- The little Kojima moments you can pull off are hilarious, like driving a guard mad when he sees a box and gets into an argument with CP. Or the amount of sabotage you can commit with a squirt gun.
- The game does a great job of actually making me not want to kill people. When guards are wounded, you see other guards trying to save them. Guards have conversations with one another that feel real, and are very down to earth, like the time I caught a guard talking about visiting his daughter. I almost didn't want to fulton him and make him my motherbase slave, but he had an S rank in Support, so my hands were tied.
- Amazing soundtrack. I love the foreign desert feel for the tracks in Afghanistan, I adore the boss themes and cutscene music, and a lot of tracks in Angola are fly too. Diamond Campaign is the single best alert theme I've ever heard.
- I really liked the boss fights because they complemented the freedom of approach that the missions have. Would've really liked a few more individualized bosses since half of them are Skulls, but because the Skulls were the most versatile bosses in the series, I can't complain. Actually, yes I can because the one boss fight I was looking forward to doesn't happen, but I can always go fuck myself.
- I really liked how much more variety of weapons the bad guys use.
- I liked the 9 or so assassination missions better than Assassin's Creed.
- Vehicles actually operate pretty tightly, and even if I don't always have a use for them, they're great for stuffing idiots into and fultoning the jeep with them inside, or blowing it all straight to Belize.
- The Buddy System is excellent, even if D-Horse feels more like a mode of transportation than an actual buddy.
- You can play as whoever and steadily make them better soldiers. I love playing as Glaz and making him suck less every time I play.
- The graphics are excellent for a game that uses low poly character models. And what's crazy is, I end up liking the look of facial hair and hair in genera in V better than more next gen titles because they don't have that snapped on face look.
- 60 FPS glory. 'nuff said
- You have more weapons in V than I think the collective whole of Metal Gear when you factor in customized weapons.
- Beautifully shot cutscenes that make the cinematography of V stand out in ways it hasn't in games past.
- The GMP System feels balanced.
- The Microtransactions are so inane and stupid that there's literally no point in buying them, and that's the best kind of microtransactions, as opposed to what Shadow of War is doing.
- Say what you will, I liked the plot for one reason, it was unique. It's different from any other game story out there and I prefer that. I prefer when stories show and do shit I haven't seen a trillion times before, in that same series no less.
- Kiefersnake is great. He doesn't talk a lot, but when he does, he's everything I hoped a Metal Gear good guy could be and then some. It's just a shame that doesn't happen much.
- The Skullster is awesome. This stylish motherfucker oozes personality and character, and even though he only has 10 scenes in all of the whole MGSVDE experience, he has my attention for every scene he's in, and his Tapes are scenes that, in my onion, are unmatched by any other villain.
- Quite was quite the character in the end. Her reason for that stupid costume was absurd. I don't care what anyone says, it's Kojima being Pervis the Pervert again, but it isn't enough to make me dislike Quite as a character.
- This is actually my favorite iteration of Ass-a-lot, believe it or not. I know everyone says he's boring now, but I like that he feels like an actual human being for a change, because it gives way to some really interesting stuff, like him admitting he was in love with Biggie, that there's a psychology to his torture, and the way he played off of McFiddler was probably the most compelling supporting cast dynamic yet.
- McFiddler is officially my favorite support team leader. In a lotta ways, V is his story more than Kiefersnake, and it didn't bother me, because we have a clear window into his journey from MPW to his descent in V. And seeing him hold that anger, even after Skullster went to Belize, only proved the point that Kaz needs an enemy.
- Huey's story was a really compelling one, I found. You don't really know if he did what they said he did, or if it's Kaz's thirst for revenge clouding his judgement. And even if Huey killed Strangelove, murder is the name of business here at Diamond Dawgs, so who are any of them to judge, in the end?
- The twist was actually something that stuck with me and made me think. And it made Kiefersnake the most tragic character in the series to me, because The Boss may forever go down as a war criminal, but she'll at least be remembered. Kiefersnake basically ceases to exist. Every major accomplishment he achieves, he does wearing some other pricks' face, and when he dies, said prick basically absorbs everything Kiefersnake ever did in the eleven years he spent as Biggie, making it his own. That twist and that revelation made me retroactively hate Biggie something fierce, and made me feel for his badass medic.
- No more nine minute codec calls about nanomachines every nine minutes.
- Cutscenes cut the bullshit and get straight to the point, which I love, because I hate wasting time on fluff dialogue, but this comes with a double edged sword scenario.
- Some cutscenes truly haunted me and got something out of me that I didn't expect to feel, because normally I don't.
- Some of the use of telling the story through gameplay was done masterfully, like in mission 43. I would have felt nothing if I just saw Kiefersnake killing those guards because I felt nothing watching him kill four men at once. But the second I had to pull the trigger? Bring on the goddamn emotion, son.
- I'm still playing this game and still head over heels because I can still find new ways to tackle any mission and still have a damn great time doing just that.
- Like I said, Kiefersnake's great in the times he actually opens his mouth, but he spends a good majority of the game getting talked at, which does nothing for nobody.
- You don't always feel the impact that certain periods of the game should have, like the epidemic, or everything post mission 43. During the epidemic, go to motherbase, everything's peaches and cream. After mission 43, everything still feels more or less the same as it did earlier.
- Best villain in Metal Gear only appears 10 times in a 50+ hour long game, one of which, he doesn't say anything because he's a phantom on Kiefersnake's shoulders, and another time, he's too busy getting his balls shot off. Skullster is practically wasted in this game, and he needed to be in way more of it, dicking around with Kiefersnake's mind because that's the kind of suave prick he is.
- Fuck Eli. He comes outta nowhere, does nothing as soon as he shows up, kills Skullster before we can, then fucks off with Metal Gear, Mantis, our boys, the last strain of parasite, and sails off into the sunset, never to be seen again. People bitch about mission 51? I bitch that mission 51 was even needed in the first place. Eli is a DLC storyline at best that gets crammed so forcefully into chapter 1, the puzzle pieces started leaking blood.
- "Here's a motherbase you can actually visit!" "Sweet! What kinda stuff can I do there?" "Well, you can terrorize your staff into giving up diamonds that become progressively less and less valuable. You can slap them around from time to time. And you can go to target practice!" "That's it? Can I at least customize it and make it actually look how I want?" "Are you high on Wolbachia, son?! We aren't made of money!" "But didn't this game have a budget of-" "-Do you want to go to Belize? Because this is how you get sent to Belize." In short, motherbase is useless and uninspired, and it had the potential to be a legit amazing feature if it could've been customizable, or if those invasions that the one motherbase stream promised ended up actually happening.
- Of all the things to warrant exploring the open world, the best we get are 10k GMP diamonds? Not more unique weapons, hidden side ops or Skull encounters, not Easter Eggs, not more hidden cassette tapes, not even those miserable XOF patches. Just diamonds.
- Achieving all objective in certain missions becomes tedious, especially when you have to listen to conversations, but the second you so much as fart at the wrong pitch, everyone's too cautious and you never get to listen to the rest of the conversation, and it no longer counts.
- Those stupid animal cages. Would it really have killed anyone to make just some of those animals, and hide them in the open world itself for us to capture like Pokemon? That way, you at least have more incentive to get out there than just diamonds and 100% completion.
- You have a puppy running around at motherbase for a while, and you can't pet it. You can accidentally kick it. But the cutest thing to ever grace Metal Gear, you can't so much as pet unless you sweep kick it. That little pup is barking at my feet, begging for attention, and it whimpers when I don't give it that attention, and I feel like an asshole because the older I get, the softer I get.
- The inability to shoot guns when driving basically makes most vehicles useless, except the jeep because guards don't recognize you as enemies if you're driving in one. Just imagine how dope it could've been engaging in vehicular chases and shootouts with people when jeeps spot you.
- Open world itself is kind of dull most of the time. Convoys, more enemy guards, snipers, walker gears, helicopters, whatever. Point being, open world needed way more enemies and enemy types than it had.
- No option to go without primary weapons and that's just absurd.
- So, we can get a boss fight against a twelve year old, where we can literally punch that insufferable twit right in the kisser, but we can't get a boss fight against the big bad himself because something something words and deeds. At the very least, the option to fight the guy wouldn't have hurt nobody. And I know it sounds like preference, but the weight of the chapter 1 finale kinda deflated for me when I was fighting Sally when Skullster was basically already taken out before I could be the one to do it. So not only does Skullster only have 10 scenes in this long ass game, but he doesn't even get a cool boss fight or any boss fight for that matter. It just goes back to cool bad guy goes wasted.
- I kinda wish the shit in FOB was implemented in the actual game, like more cameras, UAV's, laser systems, gun cams, non lethal guards, guards with stealth camo, all that wonderful bean footage. It feels like kind of a waste to relegate it all to just one area.
- How come XOF is the main bad guy unit but we only face off against them in two missions the entire MGSVDE experience?
- Some scenes really did feel like they should've been cutscenes, like finding Strangelove's body in the Mammal Pod. Hearing that they found the body isn't quite the same as the visual "holy shit" of seeing her skeleton inside that pot. Same with the epidemic conversations. We needed to see more of motherbase in shambles, because my only sense of urgency was my staff levels dropping like crazy, which made me care, but not Kiefersnake.
- The way a lot of resources get held hostage by FOB and how they go away when the game is offline is just plain shitty, especially for those who don't have a bunch of GMP to go around when they're offline, or if they just have shitty connections that can't be helped.
- FOB and MGO3 are two great multiplayer games that go completely undercooked and underutilized, to the point where it might've been better if one was scrapped in favor of more fleshing out of the other. In this case, I vote scrapping MGO3 for a much better FOB than we got.
- On the subject of FOB, at this point, I'm convinced the shit-ass God awful Nuke Tab is intentionally unresolved because fuck peace apparently.
- For all the OP shit we already have in the game, I really would've liked having a customizable Battle Gear that I could've taken with me on the field, where I could use it to blow things up, then wash it, and take care of it, and feed it bird seeds.
- The repeating missions really shouldn't have been main missions. There should've been a separate tab for those, like 'Extra Ops' or some shit, because that's all they are, and treating them as main entries doesn't make sense even thematically. It's not like V needs padding out, it has almost 40 missions in V alone, and that alone runs longer than pretty much every MGS game before it combined (when you don't watch cutscenes).
- This game needed more head gear, especially for Kiefersnake. The scarf is nice, but being able to actually wear the face scarf, or the gas mask, a beret, or anything wouldn't have been remiss. As is, having the option almost feels worthless when Kiefersnake only has two options, and regular soldiers only have three.
- Side ops are fun, but none of them come close to Ghost Hunting or playing with Kaz's fiddle in MPW. Y'all are straight lying if you're telling me you wouldn't have loved a "Date with Ass-a-lot" side op. (or a date with Code Talker. For real, I can listen to that man sexily eat burgers for days)
- Sounds weird, but for as often as I gave the older games shit, I wish that there was a little more levity in V. Not poo jokes and Kiefersnake badly hitting on women, but some more humanity where we see, angry or not, these guys are still human, and once upon a time, some of them were goofballs. Even if McFiddler is, essentially, Captain Ahab, he was still once that guy who wrestled Biggie naked in a steam room, then went nuts when Biggie praised the box tank. Just glimpses of who he was wouldn't have hurt.
- Inaccessibility of side ops is weird. I don't get why the yellow ones can't be replayed, or why you can only play certain side ops at certain points, and why you can't just pick and choose like in MPW.
- Demon Snake should've only been reserved for the nuke owners to truly punish players who compromise peace for the servers at large, not punish players for how they play their own individual games offline. I saved all the goddamn goats in Afghanistan, I don't deserve to have my horn grown and for all my guards to be scared of me because I set a few dozen people on fire.
- Child soldiers are wasted in this game because the way child soldiers really work is that they're used as a kind of 'human shield.' They fight among the men because a moral man doesn't have in him to kill a kid. That's lost if the missions where in child soldiers show up, it's nothing but child soldiers anyway, because then, you can just go with non lethal weapons in advance, and not face the moral challenge this should pose. There's only one mission with child soldiers among the adults, and it's so brief a moment, you can completely miss it.
Rocket Arena (For your Consideration)
People seem to put it in the same boat as Apex legends and Fortnite when it comes to the price tag being a dealbreaker (Which i can only assume is because its cartoonish, because when it comes to gameplay its nothing like those games, honestly it stands on its own, Supersmash bros meets overwatch is the best analogy i have seen, I have also seen Powerstone as well which i have never played so i can not relate)
-The Store, Everything can be bought with in game currency, and in game currency is not hard to obtain, spending money in that area is not necessary in the slightest
-Battlepass, this does cost 950 rocket fuel but like many other battlepasses you will get enough rocket fuel to purchase the next one and so on. The mythic edition 39.99 comes with 1000 RF so you are looking at $40 if the battlepass aspect is important to you (I assume for most it is) The game will release all its characters, modes and maps for free. Paying for games is nothing new and $30-$40 down is worth every penny as I have spent far more on games that offer far less IMO but I know many of you would feel the same way.
This is not a pay 2 win game There are unlockable artifacts in which you can equip 3 to alter the character as you see fit. The gear also has ranks to upgrade it, in Social all your artifacts can be ranked up to lvl 3 while in Competitive it is fixed across the board and all of them are already unlocked.
Also you have the option to enable cross play.
The Playerbase: People claimed it to be DoA due to it not being f2p even though the game scored highly across most if not all the critics. The playerbase is not big but it is passionate and growing ever so slightly and matches are fast to find (Depending on area i know someone in Australia was still enjoying it with bots but couldn't find anyone in matchmaking) I understand money is an issue but if the game interests you and you can spend $30-$40 I really think you should give this game a chance. There is no reason for this game to die and the only way to increase the playerbase is to get more players! So I am promoting the game because it obviously wasn't marketed well but importantly because it is deserving and i really dont want to see a great game like this just go to waste.
I am not here to debate anything I just think people should take a second look at this game and really consider it.
That being said, yes there are issues that need to be addressed by the devs that they are aware of but even in its current state its fun as hell and addicting. The main fixes people are asking for are balancing of characters (naturally), POV sliders on console, the option to change regions for servers, Offline mode, better matchmaking for playing people in your skill level (more players), leaderboards.
Nothing that a few patches can't fix.
Again, I get its not f2p and that alot of people dont like that, I just ask that you really look into it and reconsider as I believe the price tag is more than reasonable.
