As of late, I’m becoming more outspoken about FIRST...
The goal of FIRST Inspires is to do exactly as their name says, “inspire”. Their goal is to inspire students to get into STEM now more than ever as the market increases for those technical abilities. Believe it or not, you’re not encouraged to think outside of the box here. It’s a very closed-loop feedback system where known mentors or well-known mentors’ designs are used to show students how to build robots and thus the only innovators are those already in industry. If you think about it for a second, mentors are supposed to primarily be hands-off unless there’s something you want to do that’s mostly out of your wheelhouse then they should be able to explain what they’re doing to you and show you how to do it then have you replicate what they did 3 more times. Nothing in FIRST has been rocket science during the last decade and it will continue to get over-simplified during this next decade as the lack of elegant design becomes more apparent - unless you’re a wealthy team then it’ll become more divided for you. As much as I’d love to wish everyone good luck during 2020’s game, I’m instead finding myself learning to encourage anybody in FIRST to leave after a year or two.
To actually get to the meat of the content here, after driving away everyone that doesn’t want to read some beefy text, FIRST has openly stated that the environments that students are put into can be toxic, belittling, and generally polar-opposite to their own personal ideals for Gracious Professionalism. I, as an alumni, ex-mentor, and currently a university student carry with me a singular ideal that no student should ever be shamed for wanting to try something new. However, the “more elite teams” in some areas have become increasingly more toxic in that they have openly become disrespectful to students looking to explore new opportunities. (I.e. Mechanical student wants to try programming, programming wants to try design, etc etc etc. Not including the notion that racism had become apparent prior to my personal leave, and it hasn’t gotten any better.) So, while there are many without issues in FIRST and FRC, the notable stance students have taken and the toxicity that has started to come into light is slowly changing FIRST, and not generally in a gracious nor professional way. I loved being a student trying to figure out what did or didn’t work with the robot, but after the first year there really wasn’t a challenge to it any more. By the second year, I thought I’d be done and moving on to University. Instead during my second year, I had been asked by a few students to return and work with them on different things and help where I could, and I did that but with respect. I chose to eat last despite being a mentor and being offered to eat first. I occasionally skipped out on food as both a mentor and a student and decided that I would just pick up food on my way home from the high school. Those were my choices and I’m proud of those as choices because it made sure that I accommodated everyone without really effecting myself at the time. I was offered up to the district to be a CSA and had a team that immediately told me that they didn’t need my help and returned to the field with the same issue and I was told by the FTA of the event to go check on them, so I did. The mentor of the team had asked me “what the hell am [I] doing in [their] pit?” And I explained what the shirt and badge said and meant to them in as nice of a tone as I could and they insisted that they did not need help once again. So, I returned to the FTA and asked if there was anybody else I could help as the team is now insisting they don’t need help, the FTA just told me to wait until after their next match then be more assertive about helping. I agreed and the FTA has a chat with the coach on the drive team (who also happened to be the team’s coach, mind you). The FTA proceeded to tell them that I, the CSA, will be helping them and to stop arguing with me and let me help. The coach proceeded to try to argue with the FTA and I had left to go work with the team, who was actually decently nice and legitimately didn’t know what the issue was or how to debug the issue either. So, we walked through some stuff and had learned what issues existed and what they were aware of and I did what I could to help them, they figured it out from there and were back on the field before the next match successfully. The FTA and the team at that point were happy, but that coach was livid that they had to receive a CSA and tried to cuss me out of their pit twice. Again, my choice to be forceful about it but the event staff had my back then as a recent alumni with knowledge of the control system at that point.
Note that both stories are actual events, and those are literally the best experiences I had with FIRST actually. Everything else is kind of “meh” or “just alright”. The dark side of the program that nobody wants to talk about though is that there are teams where they actively call non-white students racial slurs with the event staff, mentors, and teachers actively doing nothing about it. I said something to the student saying that and they claimed the other student hadn’t said anything about it and I had flat out explained to them that it wasn’t appropriate to do AT AN EVENT, IN FRONT OF JUDGES. But when you’re dating someone in the district, the judges kind of forgive things like this apparently. The team had still received awards at that event and were not thrown out or pulled aside to have “that” discussion. I personally had pulled another mentor aside and checked with them and they said that it was fine, at this point I had given up the metal I had gotten with that team to a student and proceeded to watch the other mentors not do the same - c’est la vie, today I’m glad I don’t have a metal for their actions (or inaction as it were). Keep in mind, this incident was not the last time I had to hear racial slurs at an event and one was tossed in front of sponsors between two students, the sponsor had promptly dropped most (if not all) of their contracts with FIRST teams and they no longer sponsor FIRST overall.
Now we get to the worst of it all, baseless accusations based on students with legitimate mental disorders that actively need some coaching by a third-party. So, I had silently left FIRST over an issue where a student accused me, as a mentor and volunteer, of trying to date students and that it was illegal where I am. I would like to say that I wasn’t dating students and was genuinely being nicer to some than others because of relatability and I wanted them not to feel like they were put down when they very well could be/were correct about an issue. This resulted in me having two or so confrontationals with the person in charge of the district and we had a long-ish talk initially and had just made an agreement that I would no longer mentor as that wasn’t really something I wasn’t invested in anyways. I continued to volunteer with them while avoiding that team at all costs to prevent anything from happening. Eventually, I found myself befriending to members of that team that had focused on programming and design - both of which were chill at the time and generally did not have any issues, but they had told me what happened to the team after I left. The team had gone back to using racial slurs, belittled one of the two students, and insisted that you can’t change what you’re doing once you start working on that team. The one without these issues, was a very bright student and he knew very well how to code but lacked communication skills and those could have easily been worked on by forcing them to help work with other students more - which I had returned to make sure happened since I used to be like that. The teacher-sponsor I had not called out but had heard from the other side of the room call someone a racial slur and promptly proceed to kick the student off of design so they could fix something. I was baffled at this point to be honest. I was told later that they had been looking into getting a lawyer so I’ve waited a few years before posting about it.
Between students, mentors, and volunteers in this district generally becoming more and more disrespectful I get why sponsors keep leaving FIRST. I don’t have anywhere else to really make this public but if students want FIRST to exist for the rest of this decade and actually be up to Woodie Flowers’ (RIP) standards, y’all gotta do better and learn to be better. I’ve done what I can do, and have learned that it only gets you pushed out of the program entirely, so maybe students and mentors with a longer-running history can encourage people to be better than this. Volunteers, this is no time to slack either - especially as a judge - if you hear something, say something. You don’t have to direct it to a student, but do definitely take it up with their coach or with the lead judge. I will likely never go back to FIRST and will likely begin to make a mental note that it hurts you more to apply to somewhere with “FIRST” on your resume than it once did.
Y’all, it’s been good, but this will be the last post I make in FRC. As much as I make ridiculous comments here, I used to be on Discord and Chief Delphi but everything has become too toxic for me (especially whenever someone praises 254 for doing something incredibly reckless to prove you CAN do it, but probably shouldn’t). Please do be aware of your mental strain and stress this season, as this can have extended effects on your post- high school/primary school/12th grade life.

Open Letter to Steve Huffman and the Board of Directors of Reddit, Inc– If you believe in standing up to hate and supporting black lives, you need to act
On June 1, you shared a letter on Reddit’s blog “Remember the Human – Black Lives Matter”. In this letter, you claim “as Snoos, we do not tolerate hate, racism, and violence, and while we have work to do to fight these on our platform, our values are clear.”
As of today, neither you nor any other Reddit admins have shared this letter anywhere on reddit.com. However, the response to this message was swift on Twitter, where you were rightfully labeled as hypocritical based on your long and well-recorded history of defending racism and white supremacy on this site.
Among the many responses was this message from former CEO of Reddit, Ellen Pao.
I am obligated to call you out: You should have shut down the_donald instead of amplifying it and its hate, racism, and violence. So much of what is happening now lies at your feet. You don't get to say BLM when reddit nurtures and monetizes white supremacy and hate all day longMany others shared links and screenshots of your past statements saying “Open racism and slurs are fine to post on Reddit”.
The problem of Reddit’s leadership supporting and providing a platform for racist users and hateful communities has long been an issue. Nearly six years ago, dozens of subreddits signed the original open letter to the Reddit admins calling for action. While the Reddit admins acknowledged the letter and said it was a high priority to address this issue, extremely little has been done in the intervening years.
On June 5, you shared this update on /Announcements, Upcoming changes to our content policy, our board, and where we’re going from here. In the post, you stated that there is a need for continued adjustments of Reddit’s content policy to address racism and that this remains a priority. These continued statements that you hear us, that this is a priority, or that you are working on it are not enough. It has been five years since your return as CEO and this still remains Reddit’s most glaring problem.
Steve, if you and Reddit genuinely care about the values of standing up to racism and hate, then you need to back it up with real action. As moderators on this website who have dedicated countless hours to keeping this site running, we call on Reddit to take the following steps:
- Enact a sitewide policy against racism, slurs, and hatespeech targeted at protected groups. For too many years, Steve Huffman and the other Admins have stood by and allowed this site to fester with hate in the name of “free speech.” It is time to enact a specific and detailed policy that protects the disadvantaged members of our communities from hate based on their sexuality, gender identity, ethnicity, country of origin, religion, or disability.
- Be proactive in banning hate-based communities In the past Reddit has only taken action on hate subreddits when they were featured in the news and risked Reddit’s reputation or when they were documented and featured on /AgainstHateSubreddits and other forums. AHS should not have to be responsible for raising awareness of hate subreddits and reporting them to the admins. This site should take responsibility for keeping its users safe by banning any remaining subreddits devoted to hate and racism and preventing the creation of hateful subreddits in the future.
- Be proactive in banning hate users Reddit needs to not only ban hate subreddits, but must be proactive in banning the moderators of these subreddits and their most active users. Too often these users have been allowed to stay on this website after numerous sitewide violations, letting them move on to participate in new hate communities and spread their vitriol further across this site.
- Reddit needs to hire more minorities / women, especially in leadership roles Reddit needs to hire more women and people of color — particularly in leadership roles in the company — to help shift the corporate culture and policies to be more equitable for all. In addition, Reddit needs to take adequate steps to protect these employees from harassment.
- Reddit needs to hire more community managers According to Reddit's job listings there are dozens of open positions that the company is hiring for, and yet not a single one for Community. Reddit has enacted numerous policies over the years that have been detrimental to the ability of Reddit’s moderators or the broader Reddit community. Reddit needs more community managers to build positive relations and engagement with the site’s volunteer moderators.
- Honor Alexis Ohanian's wishes to have his Reddit Board seat filled with a black candidate - On June 5, Reddit Co-Founder and Executive Chairman announced that he would be stepping down from his role on Reddit's Board of Directors. Alexis requested that his position be filled with a black candidate and we ask Reddit to honor that request. While you have stated your intent to honor that request, we are asking for an announcement to be made on this decision in the next 3 months. We believe this is not an issue that should be put off for action years down the road.
With a website with the impact of Reddit on the broader conversations being held in communities around the world, this website needs real leadership and real action.
We hope that Reddit will not just share empty platitudes — but will take a meaningful stand against hate, and take these recommendations to heart.
