Season 4 Post 1 (September through December 2018) - Aston Villa - The Nightmare Before Christmas
Post 1 - Pre-Season Premonitions?
Post 2 - Free Scoring Villa
Post 3 - £100m Title Charge
Post 4 - Two Horse, Dead Horse
This is it then, the first of two posts (first today, second tomorrow) on season 4 - our last season with Aston Villa - I'll see you at the end of Christmas, in game at least.
- Robertson 80 (+1)
- Son 82 (+1)
- Oneyagu 79 (+1)
This pre-season saw us take on the South American Invitational tournament, and take it on we would.
Starting in the group stage, we won all our matches, as we beat Sporting Lisbon 2-0, Independiente 1-0 and Universidad de Chile W 2-1.
We comfortably dispatched of San Lorenzo in the semi-finals, with a 3-0 run out the perfect fine tuning for out pre-season. And again in the final we would dominate, though this time the score wouldn't go past 2, as we won 2-0 - We were Champions of the pre-season tournaments.
Again I didn't really have too many transfer plans - plans as always will change.
Things started with the news that Tolisso would be leaving the club, with the Frenchman signing on for Watford in a massive £15m deal - he's not really been developing for us, and that kind of money was too good to turn down for a squad player.
Another first season signing left, this time Iheanacho leaving the club permanently as his failure to grow made him surplus - we got £6.5m for a player we bought for £1.5m - as the Nigerian leaves for Southampton.
Once again, a first team player would leave as Loftus-Cheek left us for Arsenal. The London based club took him back to the city in a £25m deal, and to be honest I am not too bothered - he may have been captain last season, but he never really shone on the pith, and his lack of mobility was annoying at times.
Another youngster we signed from Chelsea, Clarke-Salter left us, as he signed for Nottingham Forest in a £750k deal. I didn't like him, in the rare appearances he made for me, as he came across as weak - both physically and in a challenge.
Westwood left as there's no place left for him in our midfield line up, the central mid joins QPR for £4m.
Russian striker Kokorin left, I wanted him to stay because even as a substitute he's been one of my better players. But Tottenham came in with a bid at £23.5m and well, it's just too good to turn down.
Keane was the next squad player to leave, the unimpressive centre back following Westwood to QPR for £4.8m.
Then we sold on youngster Lewis, we moved him on to Real Madrid for £2m, as he's 1) down the pecking order down the left and 2) not even the best young left mid in the team.
Speaking of young left mids, youth product Talbot joined FC Bayern Munich on a 2 year loan. While Aarons went on to SM Caen for this year.
Central midfielder Miller came through the academy, and has joined Brighton for two seasons.
Finally, Forster departs, following Kokorin to Spurs in a £3.7m move - the keeper has been usurped by Walton, for both Club and Country, and so his future does not lie here.
The first signing of the window saw Free Agent teen wonder Dickinson join, the English centre back has a ton of potential.
We signed in Kenedy as the replacement for Kokorin, as Chelsea's Brazilian striker joined us for £14m - the pacey forward is a goal threat, and I am glad he's here.
We followed up one Brazilian with another, as Juventus full back Alex Sandro signed for us in a £19.5m deal. He's one of the best in the position, and I had wanted someone more reliable in the position than Galloway, and so we picked him up to play first team with Robertson behind him.
Weigl signs in from Dortmund, as the German is Geis' creative understudy in the midfield and I see him as the long term player for the midfield - and paying £12.5m for the luxury does not sound so bad.
To replace Loftus-Cheek, we moved for Tielemans from Barcelona. He'd not been getting played, with Barca preferring to play the kids of their own academy ahead of him and also signing others to play ahead of him too. We signed the 21 year old Belgian for £35m, a huge price to pay, but he's a huge talent all the same.
And as for our final transfer, we would seal a £35m deal for Sterling of Manchester City. The English winger coming in to add just that little bit extra star-quality to the side - even if I'm not entirely sure we needed him.
So as August, and the defence of the title, opens we start with an extended pre-season. The community shield will be contested between ourselves and Chelsea at Wembley, as we hope to start the season with silverware. After that, we play Chelsea again on opening day, in a month where we also play Liverpool, Spurs and Man City.
Squad cards for 2018/19
- N vs Chelsea, W 2-1 (Lacazette, Geis)
- A vs Chelsea, W 3-0 (Paco 2, Tielemans)
- H vs Liverpool, W 2-1 (Lacazette, Geis)
- A vs Tottenham Hotspurs, W 2-1 (Sterling, Kenedy)
- A vs Manchester City, W 2-1 AET (Gil, Kenedy)
Well straight wins against some incredibly tough oppositions and we know that this beginning can be called nothing short of perfect. We top the league as the only side to win our three league games and are looking fantastic.
Sturridge leads the goal scoring for Liverpool as the English forward has struck 4 times so far, ahead of 6 players who've registered 3 so far.
Daniel Ings is on 2 assists, making him the leader above the next 20+ players on 1.
Meanwhile Robles leads the clean sheets with 2, ahead of 6 other stoppers on 1.
- Oxlade-Chamberlain 84 (+2) Aarons 78 (+1)
- Paco 88 (+1) Talbot 63 (+1)
- Dickinson 74 (+1)
Four league games then, as we hope to continue our strong start to the season. We also begin the European campaign, as we hope to go that step further this season, and make the final - or perhaps win the whole thing.
- H vs Crystal Palace, D 0-0
- A vs Watford, W 5-1 (Lacazette 2, Geis, Walker, Kenedy)
- H vs Marseille, W 3-1 (Paco 3)
- H vs Stoke City, W 3-0 (Paco, Tielemans, Nkoulou)
However it was Nkoulou's goal that stood out, as the centre back scored from the edge of our own area, a long long effort looping into the net as Butland had come up for a corner.
- H vs Watford, W 3-0 (Oyenuga 2, Bacuna)
- A vs Arsenal, D 1-1 (Lacazette)
Unbeaten in all competitions, a run over 11 games in the opening two months , we've made a perfect start to the 4th season at Aston Villa. However, we have to share top spot in the table with Everton as they have also amassed 17 points so far this season.
Ross Barkley is the leading scorer with 7 for the toffees, he's one ahead of English teammate but club rival Sturridge who has 6 for the season playing for Liverpool.
Ings is the provider for Sturridge it seems with the striker having provided 4 assists so far this season, he's ahead of the next 4 all on 3.
Ruffier and Robles are joint leaders in the clean sheets ranks, as they both have 3 to their names. Chelsea have sold Courtois, so for the first time it looks like we've managed to have a competitive Golden Gloves campaign!
- Walker 83 (+1) Dickinson 76 (+3)
- Weigl 81 (+1) Walton 80 (+1)
- Oyenuga 80 (+2)
Despite two weeks off in the month, we are not spared from playing a ton of games. With 6 scheduled we are in for a hectic month, we are to play three league games - including the match with Manchester City.
- PAOK, W 2-0 (Paco, Kenedy)
- H vs Manchester City, W 3-2 (Kenedy, Oyenuga, Sinclair)
- A vs Sunderland, D 1-1 (Paco)
- H vs Lazio, D 0-0
- H vs West Bromwich Albion, W 2-0 (Oneyuga, Lacazette)
- H vs Blackburn, W 2-0 (Gil, Son)
We finished the month top by three points, with Watford in second place at this point, we are unbeaten - but I am not entirely sure how we are doing it.
Barkley and Sturridge remained on their totals of 7 and 6 to stay in first and second in the scoring charts.
Ings continues to lead the assists charts with 5 at Liverpool, ahead of 4 on 3.
Ruffier's 4 leads the clean sheets for the season, ahead of the next 4 on 3.
- Sterling 85 (+1)
- Lacazette 88 (+1)
We open the month with a training injury - and it's a heavy one, as Oxlade-Chamberlain breaks his ankle, and we lose the right winger for 3 months. I'm frustrated enough this season as is, so this is just a pile on.
At least we only play five games in the month, which is good for me, as I am not quite enjoying watching this team play so far this season - two Euro's and three League to come and hopefully we can kick on.
- A vs Queens Park Rangers, W 2-1 (Lacazette, Gil)
- H vs PAOK, W 1-0 (Adama)
- H vs Bournemouth, W 1-0 (Geis)
- A vs Newcastle United, D 1-1 (Lacazette)
- A vs Marseille, D 1-1 (Son)
Sturridge and Aubameyang jumped to the top of the scoring charts with the pair on 8 goals charting, they're ahead of the next 3 all on 7.
Ings' 5 assists is enough to retain the lead, with the next 3 all on 4 now.
Ruffier continues to lead the league for clean sheets, with 5 to his name now. He's one ahead of Spurs' Vorm on 4.
- Nkoulou 82 (+1)
- Tielemans 84 (+1)
- Gil 81 (+1)
8 games in the month again - this time our Norwich encounter not coming on my birthday - we face a difficult time, with 6 league games, but the highlight will be Arsenal in the quarter finals of the Capital One Cup.
- A vs Reading, L 1-0
- H vs Manchester United, D 1-1 (Paco)
- A vs Lazio, W 2-1 (Robertson, Son)
- A vs Norwich City, W 1-0 (Sterling)
- H vs Arsenal, W 4-0 (Paco 4)
- A vs West Ham United, W 4-1 (Paco, Sterling, Sandro, Bacuna)
- A vs Everton, W 2-1 (Walker, Lacazette)
- H vs Southampton, W 2-1 (Walker, Lacazette)
With 30 games played in all competitions this season, we are into the Round of 16 of the Champions League, the Capital One Cup semi-finals and top of the Premier League.
We've lost just once in those games, with a 7 point lead in the league and looking solid for a title defence.
However, we just don't look like the same side that battled for the title last season, it feels like we've lost that steel and backbone that we had last season with the sale of stars such as Loftus-Cheek, Kokorin and Tolisso who we could trust to come through when the chips were down.
Sturridge and McClean both have 10 goals as they're the leading scorers in the league, and the only one's (obviously) in double figures.
Loftus-Cheek, who I was just regretting the sale of, leads the assists with the Arsenal man on 6 for the season.
Vorm also leapfrogged into the leading clean sheets with 7 to his name, he has one over Ruffier who is on 6 so far for the year.
End of Post
So we are at the mid point and having a nightmare - weirdly, as we topping the table and on course for a capital one cup final given our form - but there's just something missing from this Aston Villa side that I have gotten used to.
Anyway, see you tomorrow for the boxing day post that will end Season 4, as this actually took a lot longer to type out then I had realised.
Other wise, thanks for reading, I hope you had a great Christmas people.
Post 2 - Farewell Villa
Team Preview: Székely Land [2018 ConIFA World Football Cup, 3/16]
The Confederation of Independent Football Associations, ConIFA, is organising its third world cup this year, to be hosted in London between the 31st of May and 9th of June. This is a World Cup for teams that aren't members of FIFA - stateless minority groups, disputed geographic areas, unrecognised states, countries that aren't quite countries and countries without the resources to build footballing infrastructure that meet FIFA requirements.
Have a look at:
conifa.org, the official site of ConIFA for more information and tickets (they're quite cheap and if you're in the area it should be good fun).
conifaworldcup.com, my unofficial site for some information - specifically about the history of the nations involved.
Today we move on to a Group C team; I'll be looking at Sz´ékely Land:
- Continent — Europe
- Previous Non-FIFA World Cup appearances — 2016 ConIFA World Cup
- Previous Best Non-FIFA World Cup Result — 9th, 2016 (12 teams total)
- ConIFA ranking — 5th
- Bookies' Odds — 10/1 (11th favourites)
- Manager — TBA
- Captain — TBA
What is Székely Land?Székely Land is a historic region in Transylvania. It is near the centre of Romania, but has a predominantly Hungarian (Székely) population. It was part of the Kingdom of Hungary, then part of the Ottoman Empire, then the Austrian Empire, then Austro-Hungary and now Romania.
The medieval Kingdom of Hungary was much bigger than it is today. It incorporated all of Transylvania - the easternmost part of which was inhabited by the Székely people. People of Romanian ethnicity lived in most of the rest of Transylvania, in between Székely territories and the other parts of the Kingdom of Hungary.
At the end of the First World War, the victorious allied powers started drawing the new borders of Hungary. The people of Transylvania voted to join the Kingdom of Romania, and although there were calls to form a separate "Székely Republic", they weren't successful. Székely Land officially became part of Romania.
For a while Romanian replaced Hungarian as the official language in Székely Land and Hungarian place names were replaced with Romanian ones. In the inter-war years, minorities in Romania found themselves politically ostracised - the election of Hungarian officials was often nullified, Romanian officials were appointed in their place and attempts were made to Romanianise the population of Székely Land by re-settling ethnic Romanians there.
Today, roughly two thirds of the population are of Hungarian ethnicity in Székely Land. Romanianisation efforts have ceased, and Hungarian is one of the officially recognised minority languages of Romania. Many Székely people call for independence or greater autonomy. Compared to a lot of other independence calls around the world, these are relatively peaceful, non-violent protests. In 2013, thousands of people joined hands to form a 53 kilometre human chain in Székely Land in the name of Székely independence. The Romanian authorities have not hinted at any further autonomy for Székely Land.
A bit more detail at https://conifaworldcup.com/szekely-land/
Székely Land within Romania
National team historySzékely Land have a pretty poor record in tournament football. They played in the 2015 ConIFA European Cup and lost all their games, finishing last.
They played in the 2016 ConIFA World Cup and finished bottom of their group. They found their form in the placement rounds to determine the placement order of the bottom sides, winning both their games to clinch that all important 9th place medal.
They improved in the 2017 ConIFA European Cup by finishing second in their group, above a slightly-fancied Isle of Man side, but lost in the semi-finals. They then beat current ConIFA World Champions Abkhazia 3-1 in the 3rd place play-off.
Group Stage Matches
- 31st May 2018; v Tuvalu; Coles Park, Haringey
- 2nd June 2018; v Matabeleland; Coles Park, Haringey
- 3rd June 2018; v Padania; Bedfont Recreation Ground, Bedfont
PredictionsPadania are a strong side and will be favourites for the group, along with Sz´ékely Land. The two sides met at last year's ConIFA European Cup and drew 1-1 in the group stage. Matabeleland and Tuvalu will probably be the weaker sides, so Székely Land will be disappointed if they don't get out of the group, although winning the tournament might be too much to ask.
The SquadA lot of the players play for Romanian teams based around Székely Land, most notably FK Csíkszereda, or 'FK Miercurea Ciuc' in Romanian. This is a team that runs the 'Football Academy of Székely Land' as a joint venture with the Hungarian Puskás Akadémia, the youth division of Videoton, one of the most successful clubs in Hungary of recent times. Their aim is to develop talent across Sz´ékely Land to draft players into either Videoton or FK Csíkszereda.
Their best player is probably Csaba Csizmadia, who currently plays for an Austrian second division side, but won 14 caps for Hungary between 2007 and 2008. They also have László Szőcs, a tricky futsal player who plays futsal internationally for Romania and has participated in the UEFA European Futsal Championship.
